Spring Fling Kidlit Contest 2025 entry by Sarah Hetu

(139 words)

“Spring cleaning today, Michaela,” Dad says.

“But I want to watch the basketball game. It’s March Madness!”

“Rake fast.”

The yard seems as large as the TD Garden. I’ll need good plays to finish on time.

One rake in each hand?

Too slow.

A rake on Rover’s collar?

“Rover, come!”

Rover naps.

“Dad, can I ask our neighbor, Mr. Sinclair, for his leaf blower?”

“Okay.”

Mr. Sinclair agrees, and hands me the blower.

Score!

“Can you do my yard, too?” he asks.

Yikes! That would make me miss the tip-off.

But teammates stick together, and Mr. Sinclair just passed me an assist.

“Yes,” I say.

Afterwards, Mr. Sinclair hands me an envelope. “Thank you.”

Inside are tickets to the next game at the Garden! “But how…?”

He smiles. “I know someone….”

“Thank you!”

Mr. Sinclair winks. “Same time next spring?”
